The path to the system becomes part of the system
In a local model, the primary dispatch center might reach CAD even when outside connectivity was limited. When CAD moves to a vendor-hosted environment, the agency needs a reliable path to reach it. That path becomes part of the operational lifeline.
The vendor platform may be strong, secure, and available. But if the agency cannot reach it, public safety operations may still be impaired.
Availability is a chain
Cloud availability is not only vendor availability. It includes local networks, circuits, firewalls, routing, identity, VPNs, wireless, carrier networks, devices, and sometimes third-party services.
Agencies should ask both questions: is the vendor system available, and can our users actually use it? Those are related, but not identical.
Redundancy should be realistic
Redundant circuits, diverse providers, backup locations, cellular contingency, network equipment, and failover procedures may all matter. Not every agency can implement every option, but leadership should understand single points of failure before signing and before go-live.
A backup connection that has never been tested is not the same as operational readiness. A second provider that enters the building through the same physical path may not be as diverse as it appears.
Test from real locations
Connectivity should be tested from the locations and users that will depend on the system: primary dispatch, backup dispatch, records, field users, remote supervisors, fire stations, substations, and partner agencies where applicable.
Bandwidth matters, but it is not the only question. Latency, packet loss, authentication, failover, firewall performance, mobile coverage, and user experience matter too.
